How to play
Families and supervised groups · A short outdoor walk
Adapt it to the route
Walk or review the route first and replace items that are unlikely to be found there. Choose the grid size and print cards. Set boundaries and a meeting point for the group.
Observe without collecting
Players mark a square when they see or hear the matching item. Stay on the agreed route, leave plants and wildlife undisturbed, and do not pick up or taste unfamiliar objects. Children should stay with their supervising adult.
Compare discoveries
Play for a row, column, or diagonal, or mark as many discoveries as the walk allows. Ask players to point out or describe an observation to check a completed line; there is no need to bring items back.
- Use one card per pair to encourage people to compare observations.
- Weather and season change what is available. A 3 × 3 grid is a practical starting point for a short route.
Before you print
Is an item list needed?
No caller is needed for an observation walk. You may print the optional list as a route-planning checklist.
Can the same discovery fill two squares?
Agree before starting. Requiring a different observation for each square makes the hunt more varied; allowing overlap makes it easier for a short walk.
How do I save my cards as a PDF?
Use Print / Save PDF, then choose Save as PDF in your browser’s print dialog. Choose A4 or US Letter in the editor first, and turn off browser headers and footers. Reloading or leaving this page clears your edits, so save your PDF before you go.
